À l’aube des années 80, Dylan a marqué ce tournant par une trilogie d’albums – Slow Train Coming (1979), Saved (1980) et Shot of Love (1981) – comprenant des chansons empreintes de ferveur, de louange et de dévotion. Ces chansons sont d’une profondeur et d’une poésie rares. Cependant, la force de ses convictions et la puissance de sa foi ont déconcerté une partie de ses admirateurs (tout comme son passage à la guitare électrique avait aliéné les puristes du folk en 1965).

Les deux volumes précédents de la collection Bob Dylan Bootleg Series de Columbia/Legacy ont chacun remporté le Grammy Award du meilleur album historique lors de leur année d’admissibilité respective : Bob Dylan – The Cutting Edge 1965-1966, The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 en 2017 et Bob Dylan – The Basement Tapes Complete, The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 en 2016.
