Leonard Cohen's album The Future was released on November 24, 1992 - it was his ninth studio album. Critics praised The Future’s lyrical depth, dark yet hopeful themes, and rich musical arrangements. The album's blend of contemporary folk and soft rock, combined with Cohen's signature poetic lyricism, solidified its place as one of his most impactful works. Leonard contributes seven of the nine tracks on the album and adds his strong personal stamp to the other two cover songs, “Always” originally composed by Irving Berlin in 1925, and “Be for Real” written by American R&B singer, songwriter, and producer Frederick Knight.

The Future is packed with poetic and thought-provoking songs. Standout tracks include: The Future" filled with Cohen's signature dark and prophetic lyrics; "Waiting for the Miracle" a haunting, slow-burning song about longing and fate; "Closing Time" a lively tune which contrasts with the song's themes of loss, regret, and the passage of time; "Anthem" famous for its hopeful refrain: "There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in"; and the politically charged “Democracy".
